Disenfranchised grief is regularly associated with losing a pet. This term is used to describe a type of grief which is often dismissed by society and therefore particularly painful. The study also highlighted the grave emotional toll of disenfranchised grief. John Archer, psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire and author of “The Nature of Grief” carried out a survey on people who’d lost their pet dog or cat within the previous 12 months.
